Research topics
- Neural coding of visual stimuli
- Computational function of neuronal circuits
- Structure and dynamics of multi-neuronal spike patterns
- Effects of eye movements on visual processing.
Principal research questions
- How do the patterns of electrical activity that the retina sends to the brain represent visual information?
- How does the retinal circuitry produce specific activity patterns?
Scientific approach
- Modelling of visual processing by the retina is combined with electrophysiological recordings from isolated retina tissue.
- Data are obtained from multi-electrode arrays and whole-cell patch clamp recordings.
- Methods for modelling and data analysis are adapted from statistical physics and machine learning and include information theory,
signal-detection theory, cascade-structure models and clustering algorithms.
