Research topics

  • Physiology of the retina
  • Neural coding of visual stimuli
  • Computational function of neuronal circuits
  • Structure and dynamics of multi-neuronal spike patterns
  • Effects of eye movements on visual processing.

Principal research questions

  • How do the patterns of electrical activity that the retina sends to the brain represent visual information?
  • How does the retinal circuitry produce specific activity patterns?

Scientific approach

  • Modelling of visual processing by the retina is combined with electrophysiological recordings from isolated retina tissue.
  • Data are obtained from multi-electrode arrays and whole-cell patch clamp recordings.
  • Methods for modelling and data analysis are adapted from statistical physics and machine learning and include information theory,

signal-detection theory, cascade-structure models and clustering algorithms.
